Ampilatwatja Paintings

The work produced by the artists is recognisably distinct from other Aboriginal artistic communities due to the application of fine dots and the often bright and child-like figurative depiction of the land.

Ampilatwatja Art Centre was established in 1999 and local artists have developed specific style of painting Apmer or country that respects Alyawarr lore.

In the remote Northern Territory community of Ampilatwatja 300 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs paintings show the prescriptions for thousands of years of traditional healing. The painters from Ampilatwatja have a special and privileged view of Country and the importance of the resources freely found there. In 2012 Ampilatwatja contacted Artists in the Black about a dispute with an overseas gallery relating to a contract for the consignment and sale of artworks. Artists of Ampilatwatja. Karu-Karu and ThinkFilms worked together inspired by the amazing paintings created by these talented Aboriginal women.

Ampilatwatja paintings maintain a strong focus on Alywarr lore with a particular emphasis on the natural landscape. The root of Ampilatwatja art is in the country. They are not using the kind of iconography that comes from Law and ceremony and other forms of storytelling.

These paintings reflect on role of collecting bush medicine and other sustaining plants from the. The community made a strong decision not to paint Altyerr or Dreaming stories. Instead they are painting the landscape on which the Dreaming stories occur.

Ampilatwatja painting is now established as an Aboriginal school or genre of painting and is stimulating social practices increasing economic opportunities and reinforcing the values of local lore and cultures.

A distinctive feature of paintings by the artists of Ampilatwatja are brightly coloured configurations of arreth the flowers and plants known as strong bush medicine demonstrating a deep connection to Country. Established in 2004 the Woolloongabba Art Gallery owned by Robert Mercer is dedicated to the sale of quality contemporary art. The Ampilatwatja painters have made a conscious decision not to paint Dreaming Stories in the conventional sense that we think of from most Western Desert art.

The artworks produced at Ampilatwatja maintain a strong focus on Alyawarr lore with a particular emphasis on the natural landscape. WOOLLOONGABBA ART GALLERY 26 th July 24 th August 2013.
